Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but they can occasionally happen during treatment. At Stellar Orthodontics, Dr. Stella Dong Wagner and our team are here to help you manage any issues quickly and comfortably while keeping your treatment on track.
Orthodontic emergencies generally fall into two categories: issues related to appliances and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.
What Should I Do If I Have an Orthodontic Appliance Issue?
At times, braces or appliances may become loose, bent, or damaged. While these situations are usually not urgent, they should be addressed promptly to avoid discomfort or delays in treatment.
If you experience an issue such as a loose bracket, broken wire, or irritation, please contact our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. We are unable to accommodate walk-in emergencies, but we will make every effort to see you as soon as possible.
In the meantime, here are a few ways to manage common issues at home:
- If a wire is irritating your mouth, cover it with orthodontic wax or gently tuck it under using a pencil eraser or cotton swab
- A loose bracket or band can typically remain in place until your appointment
- A poking wire may be carefully adjusted with a blunt object if comfortable to do so
These temporary solutions can help reduce discomfort until we are able to see you.
What Should I Do If I Injure My Teeth or Mouth?
If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, immediate care is important.
You should:
- Apply ice to the affected area to reduce swelling
- Contact your general dentist as soon as possible
- Seek evaluation to determine if X-rays or further treatment are needed
If a tooth has been displaced, fractured, or knocked out, your general dentist should be your first point of contact, as they are best equipped to manage these types of injuries.
Once your dentist has addressed the injury, our office will adjust or repair any orthodontic appliances as needed.
What Should I Do If I Have an Emergency After Hours?
If you experience significant discomfort or an urgent issue outside of office hours, please contact our office. Instructions will be available to guide you on how to proceed and who to contact for further assistance.
When Should I Call the Office?
You should contact our office if you experience:
- Persistent pain or discomfort
- A broken or loose appliance
- A wire causing irritation that cannot be managed at home
- Any issue that may affect your treatment progress
Our team is here to support you and ensure your treatment continues smoothly.
